A rich legacy: The history of Ottumwa Masonic Lodge 16
Journey through time with us as we explore the remarkable history of Ottumwa Masonic Lodge 16, a cornerstone of the community since 1848. Discover the key moments, significant contributions, and unique traditions that have shaped our lodge.

Foundational beginnings (1848)
Ottumwa Lodge No. 16, A.F. & A.M. (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons) holds a distinguished place as one of the oldest fraternal organizations in Ottumwa, Iowa. Its story is deeply interwoven with the early settlement of Wapello County, marking a significant period in local history.
Masonry officially arrived in Ottumwa on May 5, 1848, when Grand Master Ansel Humphreys of the Grand Lodge of Iowa granted a dispensation to establish a local lodge. Just five days later, on May 10, 1848, eight local Masons gathered to hold the very first meeting, which was instituted by J.R. Hartsook. Uniquely, because there were exactly eight initial members, every single person present had to take a leadership role, with the entire "octette" being elected to the first official staff. The lodge quickly established its local governance, printing its official book of by-laws by 1854 through the Demoine Courier Print.

Community presence and historic landmarks
In early Ottumwa, lodge meetings were historically scheduled around the lunar cycle (e.g., meeting on the "Thursday night on or before the full moon"). This was a common practical tradition for early settlers who relied on moonlight to travel safely by horse or carriage. As the town grew, Lodge No. 16 played a highly visible role in public architecture. Most notably, on September 28, 1892, members of the local lodge joined the Grand Lodge of Iowa to formally lay the cornerstone for the Wapello County Courthouse. This Romanesque Revival public landmark still stands today with the Masonic cornerstone visible on its exterior tower.

Modern history and charity
Over the decades, the lodge has functioned as a cornerstone of civic service. Beyond standard fraternal work, we are heavily recognized in the local community for our charitable outreach. Most famously, the lodge has hosted a massive Annual Christmas Day Dinner for well over 40 years. This event, run entirely by dedicated members, exemplifies our ongoing commitment to supporting and serving the Ottumwa community.
"The Ottumwa Masonic Lodge 16 has been a foundational part of our community, consistently demonstrating leadership, charity, and fellowship for over a century and a half."
